Scotland is known Worldwide for its beauty. Stunning Highland Glens and imposing Castles set alongside breathtaking Lochs, have provided the backdrop for many a movie, some better known than others.

This tour aims to provide a taster of Scotland as a movie set.
Have you every wondered where William Wallace was running in the mountains in Braveheart?
Where actually was Rob Roy’s house from the Liam Neeson movie?
Why could the real Nessie never have put in an appearance in “Loch Ness”?

Our adventure through the most beautiful parts of Scotland will answer not only these but many other questions regarding those beautiful backdrops you’ll often have seen whilst admiring movie scenes, so come with us on a film themed adventure through the Highlands!

DAY ONE:  Glencoe, Fort William and Glen Nevis

Morning: We leave Edinburgh behind as we head into the Highlands up the West of the country.  We pass the ramparts of Stirling Castle and the Wallace monument, the actual scene for the events depicted in Braveheart

Late Morning:  Next a visit to Doune Castle for Monty Python fans to see the castle that appeared as Swamp Castle, Camelot and Castle Anthrax.

Lunch:  We sample the home-cooked delights of The Green Welly stop for a hearty Scottish lunch.

Afternoon:  Our next attractions are of a wilder nature, taking us through some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery.  Any Trainspotting fans may recognise the barren landscapes of Rannoch Moor where Renton (Ewan McGreggor’s character) and his friends escape from the city for a day out. The moor also provided the backdrop for the 80s classic Restless Natives as well as being the location for one of the many house burning scenes in Rob Roy.

Glencoe - Continuing through the wilds, takes us into Glencoe, famous in its own right for the notorious massacre that occurred here in 1692. This beautiful and haunting Highland Glen has also featured in many movies.  Braveheart and Highlander take great advantage of the glen’s impressive scenery as did a number of the Harry Potter films.

Glencoe is preserved in the care of the National Trust for Scotland.

Late Afternoon: We pass through Fort William with view of Glen Nevis, famously used in the first two Harry Potter films as backdrop to the exciting Quidditch matches. The Glen also appears in Rob Roy and Highlander..

Dinner and Overnight:   Our over night stop takes us to the banks of one of Scotland’s most famous Lochs – Loch Ness.  We spend the night at the end of the Great Glen in the Highland village of Fort Augustus.

DAY TWO: Eilean Donan Castle & the Isle of Skye

Morning: We leave the banks of Loch Ness and head further West towards the Coast and the famous Isle of Skye. Before crossing the sea to Skye we’ll explore the little village of Plockton  famous not only for its rather unexpected palm trees but also as the setting for the village of Loch Dubh in the TV series Hamish Macbeth and also as the village on the Summer Isles in the Wicker Man.

Late Morning: Often cited as Scotland’s most famous and most photographed Castle, Eilean Donan has its own fascinating history but is best know for appearing in Highlander, James Bond and also in the movie of Loch Ness

Lunch: Lunch will be had on the Isle of Skye itself, in the harbour town of Portree. There are many options for lunch in this thriving little village, centre of island life as well as plenty of gift and craft shops.

Afternoon:  The afternoon will be spent taking in many of this stunning island’s scenes and spotting all the familiar places which have been used in movies to date.
The Cuillin Mountains need no extra attraction to recommend them but they have featured in Highlander and Dragonslayer among others. We head up the East side of the island to experience the stunning views of the Old Man of Storr used in The Wicker Man. Most recently the Quiraing area of Skye featured in the blockbuster movie Stardust as well as having lent its circuitous roads to the backdrop for many car adverts.

Late Afternoon:  We leave the Island to return through Glen Shiel and Kintail to once again spend the night on the banks of Loch Ness.

Dinner and Overnight: You have time to enjoy the traditional surroundings of Fort Augustus for another night.

DAY THREE: Loch Ness, Inverness, Cairngorms & Perthshire

Morning: Upon leaving Fort Augustus we follow the Northern Shore of Loch Ness, ironically NOT actually the location for filming of the movie of the same name!

We have a chance to look out for the famous monster and pass the ruins of Urquhart castle, another of Scotland’s popular castles.  Urquhart Castle, situated on the banks of Loch Ness, remains an impressive stronghold despite its ruinous state. Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart’s remains include a tower house that commands splendid views of the famous loch and Great Glen.

Saint Columba was a Christian Saint living in around 500 A.D., who was credited with bringing Christianity to Scotland. The Saint was said to have made the first recorded sighting of the famous Loch Ness Monster, in 565 A.D. As the story goes, he was in the Loch Ness area teaching Christianity to his followers when he saw the Niseag (Celtic name for Ness, or Nessie) 'rise out of the water'.

Late Morning: Before lunch we have the opportunity to visit the impressive Culloden Battlefield. This is the site of the famous 1746 battle, which signalled the breakdown of the Highland clan system and the beginning of large-scale emigration from the Highlands.

Lunch: Having started our journey into Cairngorm national park – one of the largest in the UK, we will enjoy lunch in the picturesque village of Kingussie.  Kingussie boasts not only a strong link with the ancient Highland sport of Shinty but also a claim to fame as one of the major locations in the popular TV series Monarch of the Glen.

Afternoon: We descend through Monarch of the Glen country and into Perthshire where we will visit the village of Dunkeld associated with part of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  You will hear tales of the eponymous King and also the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, Alexander Stewart. There will even be the opportunity to visit the site of his grave in Dunkeld cathedral.

Late Afternoon: We descend through Perthshire heading back to Edinburgh over the impressive Forth Road Bridge with views for its even more famous neighbour the Forth (Rail) Bridge.  The 2.5 km. (1.5 mile) Forth Railway Bridge, the world’s first major steel bridge, with its gigantic girder spans of 521 m. (1710 ft.) ranks as one of the great feats of civilization. It was begun in 1883 and formally completed on 4 March 1890, when HRH Edward Prince of Wales tapped into place a ‘golden’ rivet.

We return to Edinburgh for about 5.30pm having had a movie-tastic tour!
